How to Patch Test Skincare Properly
To patch test, apply a small amount of the product to the inner forearm once a day for five days and watch for redness, itching, swelling or bumps. If nothing happens, move to a small patch beside the jaw for two more days before using it on your whole face.
It is the least glamorous step in skincare and the one that prevents the most misery. Five days is a small price against a reaction across your entire face.
The method
- Pick the site. Inner forearm — thin skin, easy to observe, easy to cover.
- Use a realistic amount. A pea-sized amount over a coin-sized area.
- Once daily for five days. Some reactions are cumulative and only appear on day three or four. A single application is not a patch test.
- Leave it alone. Do not wash the area immediately or layer other products over it.
- Then test near the face. If the forearm stays clear, apply beside the jaw for two more days. Facial skin is more reactive than arm skin, so this second stage matters.
Reaction, or just the product working?
This is where most people get stuck. Some sensations are normal; some are not.
- Usually fine: brief tingling that fades within a few minutes; slight warmth on application; mild dryness in the first week of a new active.
- Stop using it: itching, a rash or hives, swelling, burning that persists or worsens, small bumps, skin that is red and stays red hours later.
The distinction is duration and direction. Something that settles within minutes is usually the formula. Something that builds over hours, or gets worse each day, is a reaction.
If it is worse on day four than on day one, that is not your skin adjusting.
When patch testing matters most
- Any product containing fragrance or essential oils.
- Your first retinol or retinol alternative.
- Exfoliating acids.
- Anything at all if you have eczema, rosacea, or a history of contact dermatitis.
- Every new product, if you have reacted to skincare before.
If you do react
- Stop using the product. Do not push through.
- Rinse the area with cool water and use a plain moisturiser.
- Do not introduce anything else while your skin settles.
- Write down the product and, if you can, which ingredient you suspect — it makes the next choice easier.
- For a severe reaction, or one involving swelling or difficulty breathing, seek medical help immediately.
We are a skincare brand, not a clinic. Anything beyond mild and short-lived should be looked at by a doctor or a dermatologist.
Common questions
Can I patch test several products at once?
You can, on separate clearly-spaced patches — but if you react you may not know which one did it. One at a time is slower and more useful.
Does a clear patch test guarantee no reaction?
No. It substantially reduces the risk; it does not remove it. Sensitisation can develop after longer exposure.
What if I already bought it and it is opened?
Patch test anyway. Knowing on day two is better than finding out across your whole face on day ten.
