Its water-binding behaviour is well established. Effects are hydration-related and reverse when you stop using it — this is a comfort and appearance ingredient, not a structural one.

Apply to damp skin and follow with a cream or oil. Used on dry skin in dry air, a humectant can draw moisture out of deeper layers and lose it to the atmosphere, which is why some people find it makes their skin feel worse.
