INCI
Salicylic Acid
Also called
BHA, beta hydroxy acid
Best for
blemish-prone skin, congestion, oily skin

Salicylic acid is an oil-soluble exfoliating acid. Because it can move through sebum, it is used to help clear pores rather than only working on the skin surface, which is why it appears in products aimed at blemish-prone and oily skin.

How well established is this?

Well established as a cosmetic exfoliant with decades of use. Persistent or severe acne is a medical condition and worth discussing with a doctor rather than managing with cosmetics alone.
